Prostate is a male muscular hazelnut- shaped gland.
It lies below the bladder and surrounds the urethra.
It produces the liquid which transports spermatozoids. The prostate reaches its normal size during adolescence.
In middle-aged men the prostate may start to grow again for reasons which are not clearly known. Due to this enlargement the prostate may squeeze or partly block the urethra. This may cause problems with urinating.
The enlarged prostate or benign prostate enlargement, called Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) occurs in almost all men as they age. It is a benign curable disease which does not increase the risk of cancer. BPH is probably a normal part of the aging process in men, caused by changes in hormone balance and in cell growth.
Typical symptoms of prostate enlargement include:
-Trouble getting a urine stream started and completely stopped ( dribbling)
-Often feeling like you need to urinate. This feeling may even wake you up at night
-A weak urine stream
-A sense that your bladder is not completely empty after you urinate.
-Burning or pain on urination
-Urge – a frequent or urgent need to urinate
-Blood in the urine (haematuria)
How is the procedure carried out
The most advanced surgical treatment of BPH includes the use of Green laight laser.
More than 500.000 men all over the world have been treated in this way.
A specialist at the Atlas hospital will assess if the patient is the right candidate to undergo this procedure. If this is the case the doctor gives him all the necessary information about the whole procedure and postoperative course.
This kind of treatment speeds up the recovery period, the catheter is used for a short time and bleeding is minimal.
The symptoms most often disappear immediately after the intervention or within 72 hours.
