A specialist in thoracic surgery
He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, in November 2011 with a GPA of 8.60. He completed his medical internship at the clinics of the Clinical Center of Serbia and the Health Center Savski Venac.
Specialist Academic Studies:
In October 2017, he defended his final thesis on “Surgical Treatment of Pulmonary Metastases of Colorectal Carcinoma” and obtained the title of Academic Specialist in Surgical Anatomy. The examining committee included prof. dr Maja Ercegovac, prof. dr Velimir Marković, and prof. dr Dragan Radovanović.
Doctoral Studies
He enrolled in doctoral studies in October 2017 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, specializing in Reconstructive Surgery. The studies are in progress.
Specialization
In April 2017, he commenced specialization in thoracic surgery at the Clinic for Thoracic Surgery, a wing of the University Clinical Center of Serbia. He passed the specialist exam in July 2022 with a commendable performance before the committee consisting of prof. dr Maja Ercegovac, prof. dr Miloš Velinović, and prof. dr Nebojša Radovanović.
Subspecialization
In October 2023, he began subspecialization in Transplantology with Transfusion Medicine. The subspecialization is in progress.
Memberships in Associations
Dr Marko Popović is a member of the Respiratory Association of Serbia (RUS), the Association of Endoscopic Surgeons of Serbia (UEHS), the European Respiratory Society (ERS), and the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS).
Professional Development
In 2023, he completed the ESTS–ERS Collaborative Course on Thoracic Oncology in Zurich, Switzerland.
In 2022, he finished the Chest Wall Cadaver Workshop at the Institute of Anatomy, University of Basel,
Switzerland.
In 2021, he completed the Thoracic Ultrasound Training Programme organized by the European Respiratory Society (ERS).
In 2017, he finished the Introduction to Flexible Bronchoscopy (IFB) Course in Belgrade organized by the World Association for Bronchology & Interventional Pulmonology.
In 2015, he completed the ALS Provider Course organized by the European Resuscitation Council in Belgrade.
Publications and Academic Involvement
Dr. Popović has authored several papers indexed in leading international journals (Science Citation Index). He is a co-author in two chapters of the postgraduate textbook at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, and a guest lecturer at numerous international and national professional meetings. His focus in thoracic surgery includes lung and pleural cancer surgery, surgical treatment of benign and congenital lung and pleural diseases, diaphragmatic diseases, chest wall, and mediastinal diseases.
At the Clinic for Thoracic Surgery, under the mentorship of prof. dr Radoslav Jaković, prof. dr Dragan Radovanović, prof. dr Maja Ercegovac, and asst. dr Slaviša Baščarević, he has participated as an operator or first assistant in several hundred complex surgical procedures in the field of thoracic surgery. In his daily practice, he performs transthoracic biopsies of lung tumors under ultrasound and Ro-scopy control, diagnostic and therapeutic pleural punctures, thoracic drainage, and hundreds of outpatient and consultative examinations monthly.
