Surgical intervention which corrects the ears is called otoplasty or ear reshaping.
It is one of the most frequent interventions in cosmetic surgery. It is used for correction of big and protruding ears.
How is this procedure carried out
Surgical intervention lasts between two or three hours, depending on the type of correction but a more precise duration of this operation is determined in consultation with a doctor prior to operation.
The surgeon makes an incision behind the ear to expose the cartilage which is then reshaped and excess skin removed if necessary. The ear is re-positioned more closely to the head and the incision is closed (with non-removable stitches or sutures) with no visible scars.
Ear surgery can be performed either under local or general anesthesia.
The recovery period is usually shorter than in other surgical procedures and patients can get back to their daily activities as soon as four days after the operation.
In the period following the operation patients should avoid any sport activities, especially contact sports.
Ear surgery is one of the most frequent interventions both among children and adults.
